ASCSN CRISIS: “We Are Bureaucrats, Not Destroyers of Institutions” — Bola Audu Tackles Sylvester Ameh, Associates
The National President of the Association of Senior Civil Servants of Nigeria (ASCSN), Comrade Innocent Bola Audu, Ph.D., FCNA, FCTI, has taken a strong position against what he described as the continued activities of Sylvester Abah Ameh and his associates, alleging that their actions could undermine the constitutional and legal framework governing the Association.
Bola Audu stressed that senior civil servants and bureaucrats are expected to uphold the rule of law, respect constituted authorities and conduct their affairs strictly in accordance with the ASCSN Constitution and applicable judicial pronouncements.
He warned against any attempt to circumvent established procedures, create parallel structures or conduct activities outside the constitutional framework of the Association.
“We are bureaucrats and not destroyers of constituted legal frameworks. Our responsibility as civil servants is to protect institutions, obey lawful processes and promote order, accountability and respect for the rule of law.”
The ASCSN National President also questioned the role of Sylvester Abah Ameh during the leadership crisis, alleging that his actions raised serious questions about his commitment to truth, due process and institutional stability.
Bola Audu recalled that at a critical point in the leadership dispute, Ameh allegedly deposed to an affidavit against him and his leadership, an action which he said revealed the position allegedly taken by Ameh during the crisis.
“Let it be known that Sylvester Abah Ameh has never been on the side of truth. His actions during the leadership crisis speak volumes, particularly his decision to depose to an affidavit against my person and office as National President. However, despite the machinations and attempts to undermine the truth, God gave us victory,” Bola Audu stated.
He maintained that the outcome of the judicial process should serve as a reminder that truth and justice cannot permanently be defeated by personal interests, manipulation or institutional intrigues.
Bola Audu therefore urged Ameh and his associates to desist from actions capable of further aggravating the crisis and allow the constitutional and judicial processes to take their course.
He referred to the judgment of the National Industrial Court of Nigeria in the suit involving ASCSN and others, stating that the court made declarations concerning the Association’s leadership structure and addressed issues relating to the purported establishment of parallel organs and the conduct of the National Delegates Conference held on 12 August 2024.
The ASCSN President called on members of the Association to resist attempts to plunge the organisation into further institutional crisis, stressing that unionism must be anchored on constitutionalism, democratic values, accountability and respect for judicial authority.
He maintained that differences within the Association should be resolved through lawful mechanisms rather than unilateral actions, parallel arrangements or attempts to impose structures that are not supported by the Constitution.
According to Bola Audu, the leadership under his watch remains committed to strengthening ASCSN, protecting the interests of its members and ensuring that the Association remains an institution governed by law rather than personal interests.
“We must distinguish between constructive unionism and actions designed to destroy institutions. ASCSN belongs to its members, and its affairs must be conducted in accordance with its Constitution, the rule of law and the decisions of competent courts. No individual or group should place itself above the law.”
He appealed to relevant authorities, members and stakeholders to exercise restraint and caution, urging all parties to respect the judicial process and avoid actions capable of further inflaming tensions within the Association.
Bola Audu reaffirmed that the struggle over the future of ASCSN is ultimately a struggle for institutional integrity, constitutionalism and the preservation of the traditions of organised labour.
He insisted that no individual ambition should be allowed to undermine an institution established to serve generations of Nigerian civil servants.
